Don’t waste your time proclaiming what’s really important to you. How you spend your time says it all. – Eric Zorn

A Question With Power

What have you been resisting recently? Do you constantly find it hard to commit or see something through?

I feel you, because I’ve faced the very same problems too.

Last year, I was hitchhiking down the West Coast of USA when I met an inspirational chap called Jesse.

Jesse was extremely ambitious, an avid learner, and had a huge zest for life. He was a yoga teacher by trade but also practiced fire spinning, qigong and poi.

I CouchSurfed with Jesse for 7 days, tried many new things (Acro Yoga, Salsa Dancing, Poi and Tai Chi) and engaged in countless discussions about life and philosophy.

In one discussion, we were talking about resilience, procrastination and the mental battle that one faces when pursuing passions, creating habits and starting new projects.

I asked Jesse what advice he had for overcoming the inevitable uncertainty that we all experience when thinking about starting something new. He replied, very succinctly:

“Don’t start things if you’re not going to go all the way. Ask yourself: Am I going to commit or eat shit?”

Ever since that day, this powerful question has stuck with me, and for the remainder of the article I want to show you how this question can be used to make big decisions in your life.

Go All The Way Or Don’t Bother Going At All

Next time you are thinking about starting a project, setting a new habit or pursuing a new passion, ask yourself:

Am I going to commit or eat shit?

This is a powerful question. There is no middle ground here. This question is binary and gives you two choices: Yes or No.

And here’s the reason it works so well: If you’re truly passionate and want something bad enough, you’ll commit to the process.

On the contrary, if you have any doubt, or lack the passion for whatever you’re doing, you’ll eventually feel the subtle tug of resistance and give in.

By asking yourself this powerful question, you eliminate that in-between hazy grey area where you toss and turn and contemplate your decision.

This question will help you focus on what’s truly important to you.

You will direct your energy into things you actually want to do, rather than resisting something your heart isn’t really set on.

There’s intention in commitment, and intention on the right things is very powerful indeed.

This question will help you make clean choices by removing the contemplation and hesitation from your decision making.

Whether you dream is writing a book, travelling the world or learning a new language, the most important decisions are always made before you begin.

So next time you are contemplating starting something new, be brutally honest and ask yourself the question:

Am I going to commit or eat shit?
